Why Do Houseplants Thrive in Spring?

Ah, springtime! As we bid farewell to the cold, dreary winter days and welcome the bright, warm embrace of spring, our houseplants seem to come alive with new growth.

But have you ever wondered why your green babies are suddenly sprouting new leaves and growing faster during this season?

As a plant enthusiast (or perhaps a budding horticulturist!), I’m excited to shed some light on what’s happening beneath those beautiful fronds.

Just Like Us, Plants Need Their "Chill" Time

Ever notice how cozy and relaxed you feel on a rainy winter afternoon, curled up with a good show and a warm drink? Well, houseplants experience something similar during the cooler months. While we cozy up indoors, our plants slow down. This is all thanks to a phenomenon called photoperiodism—fancy talk for a plant’s response to the length of daylight. With shorter winter days, your plants essentially hibernate, saving energy until the sun sticks around longer.

When spring arrives, the days stretch out, and your plants "wake up" from their slumber, sensing the increased light. Their internal clocks, finely tuned to nature, say, “It’s go-time!” Cue new leaves, more growth, and a burst of green energy!

Temperature: The Secret to Happy Roots and Shoots

If you've ever stepped outside on a crisp spring morning, you’ve felt the perfect balance of warmth and cool air. That’s exactly what your houseplants love! Many popular houseplants, like pothos, monsteras, and snake plants, thrive when the temperatures start to climb. In spring, the soil warms up, signaling to the roots that it’s time to get moving.

But here’s a little plant-parent tip: Sudden temperature shifts can be stressful for your houseplants. Avoid placing them in direct drafts or moving them from a cool area to a hot spot too quickly. Consistency is key, just like with any good relationship!

Spring: The Season for Rootin’ and Shootin’

Now that the days are longer and the temperatures are just right, your plants aren’t just sprouting leaves above the soil—there’s a whole lot going on beneath the surface, too! Roots are working overtime, expanding and absorbing more nutrients to support the above-ground growth.

To keep this process running smoothly, it’s a great idea to give your plants a little extra TLC with some organic plant food or slow-release fertilizer—I personally swear by these. They help maintain a balanced ecosystem for your plant, ensuring it has the nutrients to keep growing strong.

What About Your Plants?

I always find it fascinating to observe how my plants react to the changing seasons. Have you noticed new growth, more vibrant colors, or maybe even a fresh batch of leaves on your plants this spring?

Take a moment to appreciate how well they’ve adapted to their environment. Spring is their time to shine!

What are Fungus Gnats?

Fungus Gnats are small, black, flying pests that breed in moist organic matter like plant soil (they look like tiny mosquitoes, just without the stinger).

These pests have no regard for personal space and are also referred to as Midgies and Plant Flies.
